Out-of-network Coverage with PPO insurance plans

As you search for the right therapist, you’ve probably realized that many therapists do not participate in insurance plans, and those who do are often not taking new clients.

Our clients often tell us they’ve had trouble finding a therapist who is a good fit who is also in-network with their insurance. Don’t lose heart! While Elliant Counseling Services does not panel with any insurance providers, we can help you to get the help you need.

As out-of-network providers, we are happy to provide an invoice, referred to as a “superbill,” that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. If you have a PPO insurance plan, you may be reimbursed for a percentage of the cost of your sessions. Our clients have reported getting reimbursements of up to 70% of their session fee. Because we are out-of-network, we cannot guarantee reimbursement or provide estimates for your specific insurance. To find out more about your coverage, you will need to contact your insurance provider directly to get answers to the following questions:

  • Do I have to meet a deductible for out-of-network providers before I can receive reimbursement?

  • What percentage (coinsurance) is covered for out-of-network providers?

  • What is the maximum reimbursement allowed per session?

  • Is there a maximum number of visits allowed?

  • What is the out-of-pocket maximum for my coverage?

Your insurance provider will be able to help you understand your costs, reimbursement amount, and the process for submitting a superbill for reimbursement.

Please note: We are not able to accept out-of-pocket payments from Medicaid members for any "covered services," which includes outpatient therapy. Accepting such payments could jeopardize your Medicaid coverage.

Advantages to private paying for therapy services.

Keeping therapeutic services confidential and out of your medical record.
When you use insurance for therapy, you need an official diagnosis on your medical record. Many people have jobs where a mental health diagnosis can affect their careers or ability to get life insurance or would prefer to keep their therapy services confidential for other reasons.

Controlling the length of your sessions and treatment.
Insurance companies often restrict how many sessions you are allowed, how long your sessions can be, and what types of therapy you can have. Insurance companies also can deny the use of certain therapy methods, even some that are backed by science.

Finding the RIGHT therapist for YOU.
Insurance companies restrict what therapists you’re able to see. Studies have shown again and again that the quality of the relationship between client and therapist, or the “therapeutic alliance,” is the only reliable–and the most powerful–predictor of a positive outcome for the client.

Our clients tell us they had trouble finding the kind of therapeutic help they need. Most have been in therapy before, but did not get the results they wanted and needed to heal and live the life they wish to live. Learn more about our services and see what you might have been missing.

Seeing a therapist focused on your care.
The quality of care you receive is deeper and more conscientious with a therapist who is focused on client care and not managing insurance claims.

“Everything we do is about helping people with high-end trauma.”

Using an HSA or FSA account

Clients with HSA or FSA accounts may be eligible to use these accounts to pay for individual therapy*. We recommend you contact your plan’s benefits administrator to verify what’s covered under your FSA or HSA and ask about any documentation you may need to provide.

*Services like marriage or family counseling are typically not eligible for FSA/HSA.

Other options
